    In 2002, Professors Russ Belk and Rob Kozinets and film maker MelHalbach offered the first videographic workshop for doctoral studentsand faculty, hosted at the Multi-media Center of the Marriott Library atthe University of Utah. This workshop was attended by researchers from 7 different countries, and was highly evaluated by the participants. A number of the participants in this 2002 workshop have gone on to producefilms that have been shown at ACR conferences, used in market research, included in consumer behavior textbook packages, and employed in theclassroom.     The 2005 workshop is designed to both teach and introduce videographic methods as well as to extend and develop them. It is targeted both to the scholar who is just beginning to seriously consider performing their first videographic research or for the intermediate professional with some experience and some on-going projects.

    Led by two experienced researchers in consumer videography and a professional filmmaker/editor, the workshop is both conceptual and applied. It will involve hands-on work with video and Macintosh-based editing equipment (we will be using Final Cut Pro 4). All equipment and supplies are included, but participants are also welcome to bring their own Apple laptops, mini-DV or VHS camcorders, and video footage.

    For the 2002 workshop, several doctoral students were able to make prior arrangements with their own universities to have this workshop recognized as a 2-3 unit doctoral seminar in research methods. This option is available again in 2005, but must be arranged with the student's committee prior to attending the workshop. The digital revolution and empowerment.· The roles and boundaries of videography: emerging issues ofrepresentation in researching consumption and consumer behavior.· Conceptualizing video: theory, interpretations, and otherobjectives.· What is involved in planning a videography research project?· What kinds of projects and fieldsites may be more amenable tovideography?· Issues of doing videography in emerging markets and the ThirdWorld.· IRB and informed consent issues.· Thinking about audiences for alternative distribution options,including VHS, DVD, and web streaming options

    *PRESENTATIONS:*· Videography and promotion-tenure committees.· The Language of Film.· Arranging the film into a coherent narrative: writing thevideography narrative, deciding how to narrate, and storyboarding.· Mining Hollywood and TV for insights

    *TECHNIQUES:*· Selecting media and equipment· Using camcorders, tripods, and steadicam devices· Sound: mikes, wireless devices, booms, mixers· Lighting: problems, solutions, filters, reflectors· Editing: hardware, software, music, voiceovers, titles, andgraphics· Distribution: media, methods, media authoring software,options for showing works, releases· Miscellaneous: critiquing/evaluating video and scripts,working with multi-person crews, continuity, interviewing,point-of-view, archival footage, student projects.· Advanced Topics will include: making of DVDs, video for theweb, titling, music, special effects, color correction, soundsweetening, high definition, and other creative and conceptualapproaches to making video

    *ABOUT THE WORKSHOP LEADERS:**Russ Belk* is a marketing academic who has been involved in video projects since 1985, including work in the U.S., Australia, Sweden, Zimbabwe, GHANA, Japan, China, and Antarctica.     *Rob Kozinets* is a marketing academic who has produced, written, edited,and/or directed a number of video projects in recent years, includingwork from the Burning Man festival, Star Trek conventions, and theAmerican Girl Place themed retail environment.
